Trauma can affect many aspects of your life
Trauma is not only something that happens to you, it's also the way these experiences live on inside of you. For many people trauma shows up as a constant undercurrent in daily life: a tightness in your chest, restlessness, or a sense of dread that won’t quite go away. Often trauma can make us feel unsafe in moments that could appear from the outside as calm and normal. Trauma can feel like your nervous system doesn’t know how to relax and is constantly bracing for impact. Sometimes, especially in the case of complex PTSD (CPTSD), trauma shows up in relationships when old wounds are stirred and you find yourself reacting emotionally in ways that you don’t fully understand. However it appears, trauma can shape our inner worlds, and colors the way you experience your life, relationships, and the world around you.
If you’ve experienced trauma then you might notice these symptoms:
Hypervigilence or feeling constantly on edge
Difficulty feeling safe in relationships or partnerships
Anxiety or panic attacks
Chronic illness or mysterious health issues
Intrusive memories or flashbacks
Insomnia or disrupted sleep
Depression or feeling numbness, or lack of joy
Uncomfortable bodily sensations or restlessness
These responses are not a sign of weakness, they are your nervous systems’ way of trying to cope with the burden of past experiences, and they can be a sign for you to explore your inner world to try to make sense of your experience and tend to old hurts.
Understanding Trauma
Trauma happens when your nervous system is overwhelmed and unable to fully process what’s happening to you. This may occur in a response to a single overwhelming event - a “big T” trauma like an accident, natural disaster or other life-threatening experience. Or, it can come from ongoing, repeated exposure to unsafe and misattuned relational experiences as in the case of Complex PTSD, or relational trauma. When you live through unsafe experiences or trauma in your early life, you are left with an imprint in your psyche and nervous system that can affect you later in life.
How trauma therapy can help
Trauma therapy works by creating a safe and nurturing environment within which you can rework past experiences to release old hurts. Early childhood experiences have profound effects on the rest of our lives, and often our current relationships and life experiences can bring those wounds to the surface. While this can be incredibly painful and disorienting, it is also an opportunity for healing.
Trauma therapy works by creating a safe and supportive relational space within which you can safely revisit old hurts, find new ways of reclaiming your story and regulating your nervous system.
In therapy we can
Build and foster a safe therapeutic relationship
Understand what your symptoms might be telling you about your past hurts
Develop tools and strategies to support your feeling of safety in your own body
Find new ways to process old wounds with compassion and new perspective
Healing trauma is not about erasing the past - its about finding ways to re-write past wounds with a new, healing narrative for your present self. A skilled trauma therapist will guide you through this process with safety, support, and conenction.
